European Goldenrod is a
native
perennial plant of the UK, typically found growing in woodland and upland rocky areas, to a mature height of up to 100cm.
European Goldenrod can be distinguished from Canadian Goldenrod by its vertical flower spikes, with flowers arranged all the way around the stem (although the stem itself may droop over). The presence of established European Goldenrod can be an indicator of ancient woodland.
Botanic classification and naming: European Goldenrod is a member of the Daisy (Asteraceae) family. The genus name
'Solidago' identifies the plant as a Goldenrod and its species name 'virgaurea' means 'golden rod'.
Benefits: Attracts insect-eating birds and the seed is eaten by a range of finch species.
Benefits to wildlife are also indicated with orange icons in the plant profile bar at the top.
