Purple Salsify, a plant native to the Mediterranean, was introduced into the UK by the late-seventeenth century. The plant is grown for its attractive flowers and as a root vegetable.
Botanic classification and naming: Purple Salsify is a member of the Daisy (Asteraceae) family. The genus name
'Tragopogon' identifies the plant as a Goat's Beard and its species name 'porrifolius' means 'Leek-leaved plant'.
