Purple Salsify is a non-native biennial plant of the UK, typically found growing in coastal areas, grassland and roadsides, to a mature height of up to 100cm.

Purple Salsify, a plant native to the Mediterranean, was introduced into the UK by the late-seventeenth century. The plant is grown for its attractive flowers and as a root vegetable.

Botanic classification and naming: Purple Salsify is a member of the Daisy (Asteraceae) family. The genus name 'Tragopogon' identifies the plant as a Goat's Beard and its species name 'porrifolius' means 'Leek-leaved plant'.

Benefits: Purple Salsify attracts bees with its nectar-rich flowers.
