Brooklime is a
native
perennial plant of the UK, typically found growing in water margins and wetlands, to a mature height of up to 25cm.
Brooklime is an aquatic speedwell, sometimes known as European Speedwell. It may be distinguished from Water Speedwell by its shorter height, darker blue flowers, more rounded leaves and bluntly-toothed leaf margins. Brooklime takes its name from its use, like limes, to treat scurvy. However, the plant does not have a high vitamin C content.
Botanic classification and naming: Brooklime is a member of the Plantain (Plantaginaceae) family. The genus name
'Veronica' identifies the plant as a Speedwell and its species name 'beccabunga' means 'bitter-tasting plant'.
Concerns: Brooklime grows quickly and densely and can clog up waterways.
Benefits: Brooklime is pollinated by a wide range of bee species, butterflies and hoverflies.
Benefits to wildlife are also indicated with orange icons in the plant profile bar at the top.
