Shepherd's Purse is named after its tiny seed pods, which are brown, heart-shaped, and look like a leather medieval drawstring purse.

'Capsella' identifies the plant as a Shepherd's Purse, a plant with purse-shaped fruits and its species name 'bursa-pastoris' means 'shepherd's purse'.
