Shepherd's Purse is a native annual plant of the UK, typically found growing in urban areas, gardens and waste ground, to a mature height of up to 50cm.

Shepherd's Purse is named after its tiny seed pods, which are brown, heart-shaped, and look like a leather medieval drawstring purse.

Botanic classification and naming: Shepherd's Purse is a member of the Cabbage (Brassicaceae) family. The genus name 'Capsella' identifies the plant as a Shepherd's Purse, a plant with purse-shaped fruits and its species name 'bursa-pastoris' means 'shepherd's purse'.

Benefits: Food source for caterpillars of the Garden Carpet moth.
