Dropwort is a
native
perennial plant of the UK, typically found growing in chalky grassland and meadow, to a mature height of up to 100cm.
Dropwort is named after the way its unearthed tubers look like drops dangling from the plant's roots. Dropwort is related to Meadowsweet, but is: a shorter plant; has larger, more distinct flowers; and fewer leaves, which are shiny and mainly borne near ground level. The leaves of Dropwort are scented when crushed.
Botanic classification and naming: Dropwort is a member of the Rose (Rosaceae) family. The genus name
'Filipendula' identifies the plant as a Dropwort and its species name 'vulgaris' means 'common species'.
