Portland Spurge is a
native
biennial plant of the UK, typically found growing in sand dunes and coastal areas, to a mature height of up to 40cm.
The Portland Spurge is so called because it was first identified as a UK native plant in the Isle of Portland, near Weymouth. The plant is to be found in coastal locations mainly to the South and West of England and along the Irish coast.
Botanic classification and naming: Portland Spurge is a member of the Spurge (Euphorbiaceae) family. The genus name
'Euphorbia' identifies the plant as a Spurge and its species name 'portlandica' means 'from the Isle of Portland'.
Concerns: Portland Spurge is a toxic plant, producing a milky sap that is an eye and skin irritant.
