Sea Sandwort is a
native
perennial plant of the UK, typically found growing in shingle beaches and coastal margins, to a mature height of up to 20cm.
Sea Sandwort is a succulent short maritime plant, often found growing at the top of a beach. It has delta-shaped leaves, arranged in opposite pairs, alternating with adjacent pairs of leaves at right-angles, to give the impression of whorled leaves. Some individuals bear their flowers with both male and female parts, while in other cases male and female flowers are borne on different plants.
Botanic classification and naming: Sea Sandwort is a member of the Carnation (Caryophyllaceae) family. The genus name
'Honckenya' identifies the plant as a Sea Sandwort and its species name 'peploides' means 'mat-forming plant'.
