Tormentil takes its name from the Latin for 'minor pain', indicating the use of this plant to treat cuts, sore throats and stomach pain. It is a short, creeping plant.

'Potentilla' identifies the plant as a Cinquefoil and its species name 'erecta' means 'erect/ upright plant'.
