Petty Spurge is a native annual plant of the UK, typically found growing in cultivated land and waste ground, to a mature height of up to 30cm.

The Petty Spurge takes the name 'petty' on account of its size, compared with other spurges. The name 'spurge' comes from the Middle English for 'to purge', referring to its purgative properties.

Botanic classification and naming: Petty Spurge is a member of the Spurge (Euphorbiaceae) family. The genus name 'Euphorbia' identifies the plant as a Spurge and its species name 'peplus' means 'ancient Greek women's cloak'.

Concerns: Skin contact with the sap can cause blistering and pain. The plant is toxic if ingested, causing vomiting and diarrhoea.
