Twiggy Mullein is a
non-native
biennial plant of the UK, typically found growing in coastal areas and waste ground, to a mature height of up to 200cm.
Twiggy Mullein, a plant native to Eurasia, was introduced into the UK by the eighteenth century. It is a tall thin 'twiggy' plant, as its common name suggests, growing up to two metres. Twiggy Mullein grows from a basal rosette of leaves but has few leaves on its stems. The name 'Mullein' comes from the late Middle English for 'yellow', referring to the flower colour.
Botanic classification and naming: Twiggy Mullein is a member of the Figwort (Scrophulariaceae) family. The genus name
'Verbascum' identifies the plant as a Mullein and its species name 'virgatum' means 'twiggy plant'.
